September 6, 1998 Off to the races I go at Riverhead Raceway. Picked up a 1975 Pontiac Grandville for the Labor Day Enduros, registered and was assigned #61 in the 1st race (1st come 1st served numbering). The Enduros at Riverhead are 100 cars, 100 laps or 1 hour on a 1/4 mile track. 1st place $1000, 2-10 place varied. With only 1 week to go before raceday, I barely finished gutting & prepping the car for the race. I didn't even have a chance to paint it. But I did manage to scrape it together and get it out there. After about a 2 hour trip towing it to Riverhead, I was that much closer to racing. The most nervous part of it was hoping it passed the inspection. I followed every rule that was required, but being the 1st time, didn't know if it would or would not pass the inspection. Luckily it did & boy was I relieved. Met a few guys out there who gave me some last minute tips on the inspection and the race itself. 10:00am inspection came and went without a hitch. The race was set for around 1:30pm. Around 11:00pm we were allowed into the pits with the cars. We pretty much lined up in order. Around 1:00pm we had a driver meeting to go over a few rules. 1:25pm we were getting in the cars and heading for the track. This was it! 100 cars lined up 3 abreast on the back straight away taking up 1/4 the track. The green flag was dropped and every car was off to win. It was a traffic jam & 1/2. I manage to stay out of trouble and pass several cars each lap I went. My guess about 25 laps into it, (also about 25 cars had been black flagged & were out of the race) I was tapped from behind going into turn 1. I did a 180 and was facing all these cars head on. I quickly threw it in reverse and drove backwards through turn 1 and 2 looking for a gap to turn back around. Exiting turn 2, I had the chance, turned, slapped it in drive and was off again. The next 50 or so laps I avoided every major accident running around 18-19 second laps at times (47-50mph average lap). Around lap 75, there were only 25 cars or so remaining. My right front tire was starting to give. I slowed to around 21 second laps (42mph). 15 laps to go, I was spun 90 degrees on turn 1 and recovered quickly (this didn't help my tires). Each lap, each turn was getting harder to control as I can feel my right front tire riding the sidewalls. I even noticed the flag men watching my tire for 3 laps. At lap 90, after a near miss with the wall, I was black flagged for my tire. There were 18 cars on the track at the time, so I figure I came in 19th place. I had to be in the top 10, as my scorer (Mom!) saw several scores running a few laps down from me. But because I was black flagged, I'm sure some of these cars got their laps back. The next 10 laps I watched as 4 or 5 more cars bit the dust. It was over, unfortunately for me with so little to go. It was the most incredible time of my life. It was well worth every dime I spent on the car & fixing it up. I will definitely be doing it again next year... more often.
